Through Stained Glass: Advent Word a Day--Darkness

Jesus Christ is the light of the world, a light no darkness will ever overcome.

Darkness.

Not today.

Today we celebrated the light of Christ reflected and ablaze in the life of my dear parishioner and friend, Anne.

Today we celebrated the life of someone who preached the Gospel, using words only when necessary.

Death’s darkness does not have the last say. Rather, as Christians, we gathered for a service of witness to the resurrection. We celebrated the life of one of our own who loved God and neighbor with her whole heart, mind, soul, and strength.

Not today, darkness. Today we celebrated the Light of Christ who shined brightly in our friend. We worshipped God and were comforted as we heard stories of the promise and hope of the Light’s return in the resurrection of Christ.

Today was hard. It was difficult. But also, with the sun shining brightly, it was a beautiful day. In the face of death, we heard the good news that Love will always have the last word.

The final act will be God moving toward us, welcoming us, and bringing us home into the presence of the Triune God.

Not today, darkness.

Today, tonight, and forever, Light will win—just like Love.

Here’s to you, Anne. Thanks be to God for your story and the way you witnessed to the love of God in the way you loved us all.
