“The Word is living, being, spirit, all verdant greening, all creativity. This Word manifests itself in every creature.” ― |
Cornerstone.
What is the cornerstone of your life?
A traditional cornerstone is the first stone laid
when building a structure. It is the stone the building is built around.
It is a basic part of something. Consider the suffragette
movement was getting the right to vote. Or perhaps you have heard this phrase, “The cornerstone of democracy is a free press.” The cornerstone is that which is
essential to the building or to your life.
Another way to talk about cornerstone is to use the terms
bedrock or foundation.
Today’s Gospel lesson has Jesus quoting from Psalm 118.
42 Jesus said to them, “Have you
never read in the scriptures:
‘The stone that the builders
rejected
has become the cornerstone;[a]
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is amazing in our eyes’?
The reasons why this particular pericope is problematic are
numerous. From anti-Semitism to the strange violence, this text has perpetuated
harmful and hateful rhetoric by Christians towards our Jewish brothers and
sisters throughout the centuries. If you have time, read up on some reliable scholarly
work about this passage. Again, don’t take the easy interpretation. Did deeper.
To me, this text is about Christ as the cornerstone. The
cornerstone of my life is Love. It is the first word spoken by God and it will
be the last one to wrap it all up. The word of Jesus are words that give life,
not take them away. The practices of Jesus are ones that draw everyone into the
extravagant love of God. The presence of Jesus is one that not only produces
fruit but also extends the invitation to share it with others.
What is the cornerstone of my life? Christ. The Love of
God incarnated in, within, and around me. From this does everything else make
sense.
The cornerstone is the Word, the same one that all things
came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.
Advent is reminding me to slow down and receive the life
giving word once again.
It is what was at the beginning…
Cornerstone.
